About Us
Welcome to the UNC Charlotte History Department!
We offer programs of study for undergraduate and graduate students. These provide students with the opportunity to take engaging courses spanning the globe and ranging from the ancient world to the modern era, which prepare them for a variety of fascinating careers and for citizenship in a globalized world.
The Undergraduate program trains students for careers as scholars, teachers, and a variety of rewarding careers in law, government, diplomacy, business, the arts, and administration. Students can choose a Major or Minor in History, selecting from a variety of specialties. Faculty advisors help students navigate the major and minor, and our monthly Major Minor Meetups offer our students (and prospective students) a chance to meet friends and get to know the history faculty. Students can join a History Learning Community, take part in internships, study abroad while earning history credit, join the honors society Phi Alpha Theta, or the History Club, and apply for scholarships. Advanced undergraduates can join the Honors program in which they write a thesis with the dedicated support of three faculty members, or apply for the History BA Early Entry program, which allows students to count classes toward their undergraduate and toward their graduate degree simultaneously.
Graduate students join a community of intellectually curious and motivated colleagues. Applications to the graduate program are accepted on a rolling basis, and small cohorts each year allow for close individual work between faculty and students. Applicants who meet our March 1st deadline are eligible for funded graduate assistantships. Students can choose from many geographic areas and a wide variety of fields and approaches to earn an MA through an examination or thesis track. Our alumni have gained access to an impressive range of careers. We offer a particularly vibrant concentration in Public History in which students study digital history, historic preservation, and museum studies – fostering skills to find jobs in public history careers as well as in alternative career choices such as web development, public relations, and business. Graduate students can join the Graduate History Association (GHA), which hosts the annual Graduate History Forum and provides opportunities for developing leadership skills and to apply for a variety of scholarships.
Faculty in the Department are among the leaders in their fields of scholarship. They publish numerous books each year, win prestigious fellowships and awards, and shape the public conversation. Their geographical and chronological expertise range widely, from the United States to Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America.
We are in Garinger between Denny and Winingham. Read about this building’s namesake and read about some of our faculty featured here. Or just stop by the main office in Garinger 226 to learn more!
